Bacteria - Fecal Coliform bacteria live only in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. Fecal Coliform bacteria are not harmful to humans but their presence in the Bay is an indicator of possible sewage and disease causing (pathogenic) bacteria.
Narragansett Bay is a unique waterbody, stretching from Rhode Island Sound waters to the falls below Slater Mill on the Blackstone River in Pawtucket. The lower bay, near Newport and Jamestown has been described by oceanographers as an "arm of the sea".
As the incoming flow enters the facility, bar racks catch large pieces of debris such as branches and trash before they interfere with the treatment process. Smaller debris like gravel and coffee grounds are also separated from the flow using aerated grit tanks.
Rhode Islanders deposit their household wastewater from sinks, washtubs and outhouses directly into local rivers, in the belief that dilution will render the waste harmless. Back to Top
